Lonely and Scared (Short Novel)

Connor

27.08.12 Monday

It was a hot summer day. “Connor. We need you on case 29.” Connor looked up from his laptop. He frowned. “But I just came back from Japan, man.” Anne hit his head slightly. He knew a that a long period as a police didn’t get him out of cases, even though Anne had become a close friend. Grumbling, he took all of his investigation papers and keys and set off for his car.

When Connor reached the crime scene, his buddies came over to him. They were all frowning for some reason. Hoping that it wasn’t the one he was thinking of, he said, “Why the long faces?” Aden answered him first. “We couldn’t find any evidence, and by ‘any’ I mean none at all.” That was impossible. “Not one fingerprint?” Connor asked. Aden and the others nodded. Now it was Connor’s time to frown. “What about the body?” He asked. Again, Aden answered him. “The chief and his crew took it away for investigation, the only thing that even looked like a clue was the dead person’s blood, after break and we went back in, it was gone.” Normally, a crime like this wouldn’t have bothered them. But it was the same crime, the same way, same with no evidence for two months now. Twenty-eight people had died, and it was making the city unstable.

28.08.12 Tuesday

Connor pushed people away as he ran to the chief’s office. “Chief! Chief!” His voice was loud enough to cause people to stare. Gruff glared his intimidating glare. “What is it Mr. Bann, to make you yell out from the opposite side of the hallway?” He kept his glare for good measure. “Chief, I have something absolutely important.” Connor put the USB he brought and hooked it in the computer. As the video rolled up, both of the men could see a group of people walk up to a house. “And what, is this?” asked Gruff. “Well the security cameras were all broken for some reason on this street, so I looked around at luckily this little girl with a drone had been recording the night of the crime!” Gruff didn’t look as enthusiastic as Connor had thought. “Mr. Bann,” he said. “This kind of video from a child could be edited, or not from this day. If you are to continue to bring this kind of information, you surely should know your job wouldn’t last. Now please leave.” “Yes Chief...” Connor said with a growl, and slammed the door. Damn.

29.08.12. Wednesday

“Connor what’s wrong? Is this because I assigned you a case you don’t like?” Anne, feeling sorry, offered a cup of coffee. “Anne, can you check if this is edited in any way and that it is, in fact, Jackson Street?” She looked at his red eyes and said yes right away. As soon as she left, Connor stood up and ran to the billboard.

‘This Week’s Police of Honor’ it read.
Connor skipped the part he already knew. But something had caught his eye this morning.
‘ 01.06.2012’
Jack Robinson
’08.06.2012’
Mark Bandy
He knew these names. Why was that? The police station he worked at consisted of two thousand people. He wouldn’t have got to know everyone. Taking out the piece of paper in his pocket, Connor scanned the list of the people who were murdered. The first one on the list read Jack Robinson. A few names later came Mark Bandy. His first instinct was to run to Anne or the chief, but Anne probably thought he was sulking and the chief would probably ignore him again. He fished around his pockets for his phone, and took a picture of the list in case he would forget.

Anne
26.08.12 Sunday

It felt like the hottest day of the year so far. Even though the air conditioner was on all day, all of Anne’s co-workers were sweating.
‘Tring’ “God, another email…” Anne groaned and clicked read. As soon as she finished reading she stood up and started going to her co-workers. “Guys! Another case! I think it’s another one of those…” She bit her lip. She didn’t have to continue, everyone knew about the murder scenes that had shown up non-stop for the past two months. Scared, the city’s people were moving out and no one was moving in. Stores were empty and most people stayed indoors. Most of all, it was giving Anne a huge headache. “Guys, can I stay out of this one? I have a major migraine.” Sipping her vender machine coffee, she tried to fix her hair. “When will this end?” she said out loud. “Who knows? Anne, I found something weird.” It was Aden. “What?” Anne said with a confused look. “I tried to check the files about the people who got murdered, you know, their jobs and info, records and stuff. But no matter how hard I looked, not one of the twenty-eight came up.” A silence followed. “But that’s impossible. We know where they lived and their numbers, everything…” Anne set her coffee mug down and closed her laptop. Aden was frowning hard. “Maybe this time it’ll be different. I’ll head out to find some evidence…hopefully.” He said goodbye and left, but Anne wasn’t listening. She was thinking hard.

‘Connor, I need your help on a case. I know tomorrow you have to rest, but this is urgent.’ –Anne-
Anne was up till three in the morning before she remembered to send this. After she did, she packed up and head out the door, the second latest person to walk out. Yawning, she said her goodbyes to the chief and took a taxi back home.

27.08.12 Monday

“Connor, we need you on case 29.” It was early morning and Anne was exhausted. Connor being stubborn was the least thing she wanted, so she hit him playfully and got him to work. At least one thing was under control. “I couldn’t live without coffee, even if this is the cheap terrible kind.” Anne mumbled. She looked around, expecting one of her co-workers to say, “I agree. This coffee is okay if you get used to.” But realized with a pang that no one was there. Some out at the murder, some in different cities afraid they were next on the murder list, some not even at work yet. “When forty people are not in their place, life feels weird…” She said yet again to her self.

The lonely click clack of Anne’s keyboard was enough to drive her crazy. She busted up and ran to the door. ‘I can help.’ She thought. Running out and on to the streets, she knew there was this hidden clue somewhere that she could find, and that this case would be solved.

28.08.12 Tuesday
“Chief! Chief!” Someone was yelling. Anne looked out of her chair and saw that it was Connor. Gruff wouldn’t like this. She could just imagine him glaring at Connor. Sighing, she went back to work when Aden tapped her shoulder. “Oh, hello Aden.” Anne said without thought. What was this creamy soothing aroma? “Here, Anne, you need more than vender coffee.” It was Starbucks coffee cream on top, her favorite. “Thank you so much Aden, I haven’t had this since the first murder.” She said with a smile. Aden grinned back. As she was enjoying a pleasant time drinking creamy coffee, a very angry Connor stomped down the hallway. “Is it just me or is Connor childish?” as she asked this, Aden laughed. “He’s just fine.” “Hmmm?” “Okay, okay, maybe a little.” And they both laughed. “You know, yesterday I thought I could help and ran out, but ended up home in my bed.”

29.08.12 Wednesday
“Anne, can you check if this is edited in any way and that it is in fact, Jackson Street?” Since Connor was looking tired and had red eyes, Anne said yes. As she plugged the USB in, another yawn escaped her. “Really, is this all that I can do?” she said to herself. She saw that here hand was trembling. ‘I am so stressed,’ she thought, ‘I need to help. I need to help’ Over and over those three words were the only ones in her mind. Confirming that the video files were not edited, she went to Connor’s office to give the USB back. Connor wasn’t in his seat. “Oh, I guess he just told me to do this since he didn’t want to…” Anne mumbled. Her feet were sore from running in high heels two days before. “Damn.” She headed back to her office.

Aden
26.08.12 Sunday

“Aden, Anne just said another murder happened.” In his mind, he wanted to tell the world to shut up. But he left that thought. “Okay then I guess we have to get going. Troops one, two come with me and troops
three to six get ready to come if we need back up.” “Yes sir.” As the man left, Aden took an aspirin, the third one today. Remembering something he had to tell Anne, he stood up. She was mumbling by herself again. “When will this end?” she asked the air. Aden smirked. “Who knows?” and told her about how no information on the victims showed up. He didn’t want her to be more stressed, and was sorry about making her frown. He said goodbye, but she didn’t answer. Before closing the door, he left a little heart-shaped chocolate on her table. So she could be able to see it if she lifted one of her papers. “Bye.” He said one more time. But she seemed to be distracted.

27.08.12 Monday
“How could this happen? Not once, not twice but twenty-eight times. This is bullshit.” Aden kicked the nearest rock. It hit a tree. “I try so hard guys, but in cases like this, there’s no fucking answer.” His co-workers were not doing any better. The sound of car parking came, and so did Connor. “Why the long faces?” he asked. ‘He knows but he’s asking me.’ Aden had a thought of irritation but wiped it out. “Stress.” He mumbled and told Connor the same story as twenty eight times before. After Connor left, Aden ate some of his sandwich and took another aspirin. Worried, one of his co-workers asked: “Aden? You should take it easy with the aspirins.” “Yes. I should. But my head is killing me and the stress is overwhelming.” He said with a nasty frown.

28.08.12 Tuesday
After joking around with Anne a little, Aden saw that she had not seen the chocolate. This made him realize both of them were working too hard. He left the station early and got back home. “Gray, maybe I should quit and we can move to another city, maybe a quiet place.” Gray the cat just glared at Aden and continued to lick himself. Aden went to bed and slept for a long, long time.

Connor
21.09.12
“Connor, Chief has told me to get five teams and backup.” Connor looked at Anne, confused. “Why?” he asked. “Because, he said he has found the criminal.” Connor stood up. “Tell him I’ll bring the whole team this night.”

“Chief, won’t that be a bad idea?” Gruff glared at Connor. “And why, is that?” Connor paused. He thought that saying what he wanted would get him in trouble. But he took a deep breath and said: “No criminal knowing he’s wanted would go through a main road, and even he did, he in no reason would he not be disguised.” He knew the glare that followed was Gruff’s. “If you have a problem, you may leave this case.” Connor pushed down his anger. “Yes sir.”

The sound of a motorcycle was getting louder. “That’s the criminal!” Gruff shouted. Connor and the others got ready. “Closer…closer…” Connor mumbled. Just as he was ready to use the loud speaker to tell the guy he was surrounded, Anne, who was standing next to him, ran out. He heard Aden yell out. As Connor watched in distress, Anne caught the person’s head and flung herself to the curve. He and a couple others ran toward her. Anne was kicking as hard as she could and the convict was losing consciousness. He let go of the motorcycle and they both fell off. Suddenly the alleyway went dark. “Black out! Anne! Retreat!” Connor heard someone yell. He heard the bang of a gun firing. Someone was screaming stop. But it wouldn’t. When it did and the lights came back, the motorcycle was a wreck and so were the two bodies. Connor heard Aden screaming Anne’s name over and over again. He was weeping over her body. Connor felt grief-stricken. He looked around and found that a co-worker was coming toward him, her head wounded. “What happened to you?” She whispered to him. “Connor, I was guarding the city hall, when some people came in and struck my head with a baseball bat. They went toward the city’s light system.” He frowned. “So the black out wasn’t an accident…” She nodded. “But Connor, if the criminal was one person why did these people come to help him? And even if they were a team why did they leave him to escape alone?” He was dumbfounded. “Yes and that isn’t the only thing. The same people who left no proof decide to not cover their faces and go to a main road. You should probably go bandage that.” She grimaced at the thought of her head and nodded. Connor was left alone, thinking.
